Tory Activists Told to ‘Lie and Weaponise Fake News’ in Party Newsletter

The Tories are accused of a having a policy to ‘openly lie’ to the public after a local newsletter encouraged activists to ‘learn’ from Donald Trump

In a leaflet circulated to activists, Wellingborough #Conservatives urge campaigners to ‘say the first thing that comes into your head’ as ‘you can live that down later’.

It also gives pointers on how to learn from the outgoing US president, who ‘weaponises fake news’.

Under a section ‘Why is Trump so successful?’ it says:

’Trump has learnt that “a lie can go round the whole world before the truth can get its boots on.” ‘If you make enough dubious claims, fast enough, honest speakers are overwhelmed.

If someone tweets ten dubious claims per day and it takes you a week to disprove each one, then you are doomed. ‘Trump uses this tactic to dominate the news and to crowd out legitimate politicians.’

Angela Rayner has written to Tory Party chair Amanda Milling, calling for an urgent investigation into who wrote the newsletter, who oversaw it and who paid for it.

She claimed one Conservative activist who raised concerns about the letter was struck off the candidate list and told his political career would be ‘destroyed’ if he did not fall into line.
